Letterhead

The letterhead also has the secondary graphic, the type is in the same blue and font as the businesscard, and the copy is also Myriad Pro. I gave the text a large margin on the left to make a bit of space as the secondary image underneath comes from the left and is quite large.

Corporate Colours

After doing the presentaion, i found out that these four colours would be too difficult and expensive to print. I would change them to just pantone 2606C and pantone 3015C and have the other colours as transparencies of these.

Business Card

The first business card I made had the square version of the logo. It looked out of place and the logo image looks too big.

I changed to the long version of the logo which fits in well with the rest of the type. I made my secondary graphic at this point. I tried making the graphic out of the image i used for the logo but decided to go with something completely different and unique. To stick with the sci-fi theme but also with reference to book i made an alien hand holding a book. I wasn't exactly sure how to do it but think it turned out OK. For uniformity I used the same colours as the logo but added grey and black which make the secondary colours.

Logo go mobile

This is the logo i decided on for Rings of Saturn Publishing.
I wanted the logo image to suggest the name so it does look familiar to Saturn. The 'rings' of Saturn are incorporated with coloured bars in the circle (thats why I didn't choose to do a gradient). The rings I tried to make in the previous logo looked too large and were unsuitable so to make reference to Saturn I included just one ring around the circle. I initially chose green and purple colours because I the green reminds me of sci-fi but changed to blue and purple instead.

This is the logo that can be used when the longer version doesn't fit. E.g a square space.

Typography / Font

I looked at a number of fonts for the logo type...

And decided on century gothic bold for the logotype - i think it looks modern and fresh, it sits well next to the image and its easy to read. The way the text is arranged in different sizes and with 3 different colours the company could be recognised by the logotype as well as the image.

Myriad Pro is the corporate font - It is used for all things to do with Rings Of Saturn. Eg. Business card and letterhead. Regular and semi-bold variations can be used for plain text or headings. These fonts are an identity which runs through all products and merchandise so the company gains immediate recognition from the viewer / customer.

Logo Design

These are the first stages of my logo design. I tried to incorporate the ideas of some of the logos i found into my own designs. I actually found it really difficult and just wanted to pick up a pencil and paper and draw the logo instead of making it on the computer, so maybe instead of trying to make a certain shape that I liked in someone else's logo I should have just looked at them all as a whole for inspiration and then designed my own. These are the different logos i came up with at the start, i don't think any of them work too well but i guess that in the first stages experimenting leads on to a better design.

I think typography is really important and can set a logo apart from the rest. I liked the typography in this logo and tried to create something similar with the way the word saturn was written, i think it has a very sci-fi feel to it and would like to have used it in my final design but it doesn't really fit in with the image i made. I also tried something similar to the image here but don't like the way the shapes are restricted in a box.

I found this Zen logo interesting and tried to incorporate the handwritten font in my own. I wanted to create something modern and a bit different so I tried a brush technique to create the rings. I decided that both the rings and the font would lose their detail once reduced.

I tried to make a logo which had reference to the rings of saturn. The third image influenced my colour choices, i think purple and green work well together. I struggled trying to give the rings the shape i wanted and thought the logo was too large and out of place.

And a few more...

Research!!

The first thing I did to get started with the assignment was research. I looked online for other logos with a sci-fi theme / outa-space / saturn. In my final reflection for the last assignment I decided that researching helped with the design process and I think it is a good starting point when trying to think of a shape or theme for the logo image and even logotype. These are the images I found:

Final Reflection

The Process:

Researching other airport logos helped me with my design. I think they influenced my use of the colour blue, circles and orbits.
It didn’t take me very long to decide on a logo, but incorporating it into other designs took the most time. I played with the logo and different colours to make the pattern used on all the designs.
I found that organising the logo, type and images by aligning everything made the design look a lot better and was easier to put together.

Next time I will research more and spend more time on the typography because it’s such an important part of the design and more time on the logo.

Not putting enough time into the work, having trouble thinking of ideas and my lack of knowledge of how to do things could stop me doing a fabulous job.

Van final

I designed the secondary graphic when I made the letterhead. It is made from the logo and secondary colour, Pantone 3242 C, so it ties in well with all other elements of design to do with the company. Again I wanted consistency with all the designs so it used on all company layouts, e.g. business card, letterhead, bus and van.

Letterhead final

After reading the website http://www.papress.com/thinkingwithtype/ I decided to look more closely at the way I had set out my type, e.g. kerning and tracking.
I had to print out most of the documents to see if the point size looked okay, e.g. the letterhead: I had to reduce the logotype and make the copy and details larger.
I used the idea of hierarchy as a system for organising the content. The differences in size, weight, placement and spacing expresses the importance of different parts of the document, e.g. the business card: the size of ‘Brian Rizzo’ is larger than the group of information because it is more important.

Colour Pallette

This is the colour palette which is applied to all typefaces and layouts. It gives Berrima airport visual continuity and recognition. The blue and green colours used in the logo (Pantone 7466 C, Pantone 293 C) are the corporate colours. Pantone 3242 C is the secondary colour used in additional graphics.

Final Business Card

A different alternative of the logo is used for the business card, I changed the position of the logo and logotype for the placement on these. At first I was using black type for the business card but decided on the blue text as the colour for the organisation.

Corporate Identity features: The same font, minion, is used for the logo and all other type associated with the airport, so it is memorable and always associated with Berrima Airport. Arial, is the secondary font used on company layouts, e.g. the copy of the letterhead.

workshop exercise

My logo image is round so it was a difficult shape to make the logotype fit comfortably but this workshop exercise helped decide where to place the text with a logo.

When I was choosing colours for the logo I was trying to think of which colours are associated with different emotions. I didn’t like yellow or red for this logo, it seems too loud and I connected it with warning whereas blues and greens are more subdued colours. And it’s important that they communicate dependability, quality and relaxation for an airport.

Reflections and Designs - 3

The text is centred for the first logo I finalised, I think it is stationary and gives it integrity. There are different alternatives for different contexts, e.g. the position on a page, different signage, etc.
